Types of Breast Cancer1

The type of breast cancer is determined by the specific cells of the breast that are affected. The type of breast cancer can also refer to whether the cancer has spread or not.

Ductal Carcinoma in situ(DCIS)

DCIS is a non-invasive or a pre-invasive breast cancer. It starts in the milk duct and does not spread to the other breast tissue.

Invasive Breast Cancer

An invasive or infiltrating breast cancer is a type of breast cancer that has spread (invaded) into the surrounding breast tissue.

The most common types of Invasive breast cancers are:

Invasive ductal carcinoma makes up about 70-80% of all breast cancers.

It is an aggressive type of cancer and makes up almost 15% of the cases of breast cancer.

It is uncommon and accounts for 1-5% of breast cancers

Less common types of breast cancer:

- Paget disease of the breast

- Angiosarcoma

- Phyllodes tumor
